Who We Are

Black Box Fire is an independent theatre company based in Hamilton, Ontario. Black Box Fire was founded in the fall of 2006 by five graduates of McMaster who spent their undergrad heavily involved in various on-campus and community based theatre productions. In the past three years they have earned a reputation for offering compelling and challenging productions to the community at large.

Past productions have included The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) (May 2007), Crazy and a Half (September 2007), Stop Kiss (February 2008), Dead Certain (September 2008), The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge (December 2008), Pretty Tough and Alone (February 2009) and Down The Road (May 2009).

Black Box Fire also produces the Emerging Artist Series, a summer theatre festival which gives directors, writers, actors and anyone with a penchant for theatre a chance to practice their skills and display their talents in a cooperative artistic environment.

Press and Praise for BBF

“There ought to be a place in Hamilton for Black Box Fire Theatre Company. We need groups offering alternative theatre.” – Gary Smith (Hamilton Spectator)

"Black Box Fire continues to impress. Their shows are well-styled and they have an edge without being weird. They're smart and they know what the substance underneath the words is. They're subtle, energetic, ruthless, coy. They're probably brilliant; it's no wonder the shows are so well attended. I applaud their contributions to the Hamilton Theatre community, and urge everyone to continue supporting them." - Katie Penrose (VIEW)

“Matt Moore has proven himself to be an excellent director” – Katie Penrose (VIEW)
