Hamilton ON - On August 16, 2008 the new community theatre company on the block, Black Box Fire will open its first ever entry at the Hamilton Fringe Festival, Misha. This hilarious and heartwarming play by Canadian playwright Adam Pettle will run in Venue 3 at the Downtown Arts Centre from August 16th to 24th.
After witnessing the murder of his best friend, Max Cohen takes the audience on an emotional journey through the life and death of his best friend Misha Ilanov, a 16 year old Russian/Jewish immigrant. Told through a variety of flashbacks, Max relates the stories that shaped the lives of these two young boys, while he contemplates commiting suicide.
Based on the disturbing story of Matti Baranovksi, a Toronto teen murdered in November 1999, Misha carefully walks a very thin line between aspects of high drama and hilarious comedy. In the hands of a less skillful playwright this could have been deeply offensive, but instead Adam Pettle creates memorable and powerful characters. Director Bryan Fotheringham was immediately moved when first reading this piece and has been desiring to direct it since. Black Box Fire is happy to give him this opportunity. Misha promises not to disappoint.
Black Box Fire is emerging from a successful first season, which included the shows Crazy and a Half, Stop Kiss, and the Emerging Artists Series, a four-week theatre festival that showcased the talents of up and coming artists in the Hamilton community.
